Fall Break at the Lake

Oh Michigan, she steals my heart every fall! I’v said it before and I’ll say it again but the lake in the fall is truly a piece of heaven on earth. The crisp breeze off the shore and the beautiful sunsets can really make a girl’s heart content. So as you can imagine, going up to the lake for fall break is easily one of my favorite family traditions! Although we have been coming up to the lake since I was a kid, we have happened to plan this fall break trip for the past five years. That should tell you just how much we love it! And this particular trip was even more special because Travis got to join in!

As usual, we visited our three favorite cities: St. Joseph, South Haven, and New Buffalo. (Check out last years post here.) This three day weekend was exactly what I needed to recharge after the first half of the semester. If you aren’t familiar with this area, each little town is only about 30-40 minutes apart from one another, making travel between them super easy in a day!

Travis and I headed on up on a Saturday afternoon a bit before my family arrived. We found a sweet little picnic area in La Porte, Indiana before we arrived in Michigan. The view was right by the water and we enjoyed a relaxing dinner together. Dinner included pasta with a butternut squash and pumpkin sauce, apples, cheese, salami, a baguette, and hot apple cider.

Our first full day was Sunday and my family spent the day shopping and relaxing in South Haven. We had lunch at Clementine’s, which is super popular among locals and tourists alike! If you are a foodie like me, you will also enjoy the large vegetable mural facing the farmer’s market. We ended the day with a beautiful sunset on the lake. What a view!

We spent our second full day in St. Joseph. It is hard to pick one place that I can call my favorite, but this quaint city truly takes the cake. To start off our day, we went to The South Bend Chocolate Company for some morning hot chocolate. Each year my mom and I have taken this same picture in front of the same window of the cafe. It is the little things! Then we spent the day at Tiscornia Park and ended it with pumpkin ice cream from Kilwin’s! Our trip would be incomplete without a walk down the pier to the lighthouse!

Our last morning was spent climbing rocks in New Buffalo, another tradition of ours! If you are brave enough to venture out on the rocks the view is quite spectacular!

This weekend break was exactly what I needed and I am so thankful for time spent with my family in one of my favorite places on earth!

Always, Autumn
